Moving a parent into senior living in Sioux Falls: What no one tells you about this season

September 09, 2026

As I am enjoying my last handful of months in my 40s, getting ready to enter into my next decade, I will tell you my perspective on a lot of things has changed, especially on aging itself.

My parents are in their late 60s. Nothing is wrong with them, but this is a different season in my relationship with them. Their needs have changed. My role has changed. I notice it in small ways every month, and none of those small ways existed even five years ago.

And I still find it unbelievable I am about to be 50. I guarantee I will feel exactly the same at 70, wondering how I got here.

Time is elusive like that.

In my career, I have watched this play out over and over. The family helping move a parent into senior care cannot believe either of them ended up in that position. Not the parent. Not the child. Nobody sees it coming, even when it has been coming for years.

Life is busy. You have kids, work, a marriage, everything else. And underneath all of it, you do not want to admit your parents are at that age. Your parents do not want to admit it is time either. So the conversation keeps getting pushed to next month.

Why this matters in Sioux Falls

More people in the United States are in this season than ever before.

Pew Research reported in August that 54 percent of Americans in their 40s are supporting an aging parent and their own children at the same time. For people in their 50s, it is 45 percent.

Nineteen percent of South Dakotans are 65 or older, above the national rate. More families here are in this season than in most states.

The Care.com 2026 caregiver report fills in the rest. Families in this season give an average of 23.8 hours a week to caregiving. It runs an average of 6.4 years. Eighty percent say it started suddenly and caught them off guard. Eighty-two percent report financial strain. Eighty percent describe being mentally overloaded.

What I have seen across 6,000 homes

We have sold more than 6,000 homes. A lot of those sales were families in exactly this spot.

Here is the pattern every single time. There is not one hard decision. There are 40 of them, and they all arrive at once.

● Where does mom go, and is she ready to hear the answer?
● What do we do with 40 years of belongings?
● Which repairs matter before we list, and which ones waste money?
● Does this house need to fund three years of care or 15?
● Who do we trust with the cleanout, the move, the estate sale, the legal side?
● How do we get three siblings in three states to agree on any of it?

That is the complexity. And the overwhelm is where people get paralyzed.

So nothing gets decided. Not until there is a fall, a diagnosis or a hospital discharge date. Then, every choice gets made in a week under the worst possible pressure. You hire the first mover who answers. You take the first offer. You accept an opening in the wrong part of town because the right community has a waitlist.

That is what I did not want families to keep going through. So we built something better.

How Amy Stockberger Real Estate can help

We took everything we learned across those transitions and built it into a systemized process. We call it the Golden Age Guided Move Program.

It works for the adult child managing this for a parent. It also works for the senior doing it on their own. You do not need your kids involved to use it. Plenty of our clients call us themselves, decide their own timeline and keep their family updated instead of handing over the wheel.

Here is what you get.

● A road map for the hard conversations. Most families avoid this talk because they do not know how to start it. We give you the questions, the order to ask them in and a way to bring it up without anyone feeling pushed. This is the piece families tell me changed everything.
● An essential-questions checklist covering living arrangements, healthcare and finances, so nobody is guessing at what to ask.
● Referrals to senior living communities. We know the options across Sioux Falls and the surrounding area, which ones have openings, which ones have waitlists and which level of care fits. We make the introductions.
● Referrals to the right professionals. Estate attorneys for wills, trusts, powers of attorney and titling. Financial advisers for how the sale proceeds will fund care, and for how long. These are relationships we have built over years, not names off a search result.
● The maximum value of the home. This is where it starts. That house is often the largest asset funding the next chapter, so we run the numbers first and show you what it is worth today and what it is worth with work done. Every decision after this one gets easier once you know the number.
● A step by step process for the move itself. We sequence it backward from the move-in date so every task lands in the right order. Sort, repairs, estate sale, list date, close. You always know what happens next and who is handling it.
● The resources to get the home cleaned out. Forty years of belongings is the task everybody dreads. We bring in the cleanout crews and estate sale specialists who do this for a living, so your family is not spending six weekends in a basement.
● A clear answer on upgrades. Not every improvement pays you back. We tell you which ones return the most in this market and which ones to skip entirely so you are not putting money into a house you are about to sell.
● Full project management. Our Seller Operation Support program puts us in the seat of running it. Repairs, contractors, timelines, logistics, all of it. We sequence the work backward from the move-in date so every task lands in the right order and nobody is coordinating vendors between meetings.
● Our full Home Support Team of vetted local partners. Movers, estate sale specialists, home improvement contractors, cleanout crews, handymen and more. No hiring strangers during your hardest week.
● And two options if a traditional listing is not what you want. If you want a guarantee on the home sale but still want to maximize your dollars, our Guaranteed Sales Program does that. If you want maximum convenience and you do not want to think about repairs or renovations at all, our Instant Offer Program handles it.

Ready to take the next step?

If you are considering making the move into senior care and do not know where to start, we have the resources to guide you.

And if your parents are healthy today, this is your window. Not because anything is wrong. Because nothing is.

And you do not have to run this conversation yourself. We do this for families every week. We sit down with you, ask the right questions in the right order and build the plan around what your parents actually want. Then, we carry the rest when the time comes.
